Marios proposed at the family beach house in Larnaca in September 2021, and 9 months later we were celebrating our marriage in Paphos.
It was the most wonderful day, and I have lots to share with you from our experience that hopefully you will find useful when you are planning your own wedding in Cyprus. I have a series of articles to talk you through choosing a venue, incorporating Greek traditions into the wedding, timings on the day, pre-wedding parties and thoughts on how destination weddings can be unique; as well as some guidance on how to make sure your planning really connects with your values.
But first I thought I’d share an overview of the day.
5pm Wednesday 29th June, Marios and I married at Liopetro Venue, Kouklia – just outside of Paphos town.
The evening before, we had a wonderful night spending time with our guests on the beach at Thea by the Sea in Paphos. We were able to share in the excitement and anticipation of the following day, and enjoy spending more time with all the friends and family who had travelled to celebrate with us.
After a relaxed morning at the hotel, and a swim in the sea, my bridesmaids, mum and myself headed to Liopetro after lunch.
We had a very lovely few hours of getting ready together. Totally chilled with plenty of time.
I wore Pronovias dress, Sedna, and my mum wore a very glamorous white one shouldered jumpsuit from River Island. My bridesmaids wore Farm Rio, as I wanted a ‘high summer glam” feel, with big prints and colour, big pearl earrings and headbands. We all had statement pearl jewellery.
Marios arrived for the traditional Greek Cypriot Stolisma. He wore a blue suit by Paul Smith.
Our ceremony was held outside of Panagia Odigitria Church. I had always wanted a nice long walk to the top of the aisle – it’s my favourite part of the ceremony. When we had been choosing our venue, I loved the thought of walking out of Liopetro, across the road and then down the aisle, and it was wonderful.
We had a beautiful Anglican service. The words spoken have such depth and gravity. We included some of Greek Orthodox traditions within the ceremony. We exchanged stefana (wedding crowns) and took part in the Dance of Isaiah, with the help of our Koumbara and Koumbaro (maid of honour and best man).
We made our way back over to Liopetro and spent time with our guests.
